About Us

Lexington Hobby was opened in April 2003.  It started as a father and son venture by Les Johnson and his son Kevin, my husband.  Kevin and I were both born and raised in Lexington.  We have two wonderful children and two dogs.  It's quite the household! We recently started visiting Willow Ridge Church in Lexington.  I have been working at the shop since October 2004 and recently started working at UPS in August 2007 in Load Planning at the Air Ramp.  Kevin worked at UPS from August 1996 - July 2007 as an Air Ramp Supervisor and in the Training Department.  He started running the shop full time after the opening of our new location in September 2007.  It was only natural to start this business with his Dad since his hobbies range from R/C airplanes, cars, helicopters, trucks, full scale airplanes, motorcycles, and 4-wheelers.  I love the R/C hobby but even more the people!  I say, "Our Customers are Our Friends".

As you can tell, our passion is in what we do, the customers we serve, our church and our families.  We would love to show you the world of opportunities and memories that can be made in one or many of the hobbies we can help you get started with.  We hope that you feel a little closer to us and know that you are more than just a customer from the time you walk in the door, to the time you step out and beyond.  Please stop by or call and let us start a relationship with you!

***A Note from Jerry***

I have been interested in model airplanes from the time I can remember. I started with the plastic Cox control-line models in the early 1960s. Those things would barely fly on the best of days. I then progressed to stunt control line models and found them to be much more exciting.  In the early 1970s I purchased a Heath kit (How many of you remember Heath kit?) RC radio kit. Building that radio was a lot tougher to me than airplane building --- but I finally completed it. My first RC airplane was a high wing trainer with a non-throttled .049 Cox engine.  I did not know anyone in RC at that time so I taught myself to fly --- not recommended unless you like repairing your airplane quite often.  I built an experimental 2-place airplane in the mid 80s and my wife and I enjoyed flying it for about 10 years.  I currently fly electric, nitro and gasoline airplanes. My largest is a 110” Rascal which I sometimes fly off of Lake Murray.  I also fly a Raptor 50 helicopter.
